  1. Meet Jonathan Muszkat
  2. Jonathan is a Staff Software Engineer at Workrise, a network that powers the energy industry by making it easier, faster, and safer to do business in energy.

Jonathan started coding at the young age of 12, fostering a passion for self-taught learning.

“I used to download source codes and manuals at school and then spent hours programming offline at home. My beginnings in video game development were motivated by the desire to play on school computers, which was only possible if the games were of my creation.”

By the time he finished high school at 17, he had started his professional career by joining a company that was undertaking a challenging project with an experienced engineering team. Despite the challenge, this was much preferred to working as an IT specialist in a legal office, which required wearing a suit and traveling to the city center daily. Jonathan’s experience at the company turned him into a seasoned engineer in a highly challenging startup dedicated to website generation at a time when tools like jQuery didn’t exist.

“My selection for this role was based on my potential and ability to significantly contribute to the company’s growth, which eventually expanded to countries such as Peru, Chile, and Brazil, partnering with multinational companies and creating a product focused on e-commerce.”

  3. The beginnings of remote times
  4. After a few years on the engineering team, he decided to look for new opportunities. Jonathan started working at a US startup, joining at the company’s inception with the opportunity to work remotely in a time when it wasn’t the standard. He was the youngest on a team of exceptional engineers. He got to lead the team, presenting the product to prospective investors and developing product projections.

“My transition to a new challenge occurred shortly after the start of the COVID pandemic when the opportunity arose to join Howdy to work with Workrise. The position at Workrise, a unicorn with significant investment and ambitious projects, offered the type of challenge I was looking for to continue my professional development. To this day, I remain committed and excited about my work at Workrise.”

With time and my experiences, Jonathan realized that one of the most significant benefits of working remotely is eliminating the time and stress associated with the daily commute. Not having to travel to work every day allows him to regain valuable hours, which he dedicates to his well-being and family or deepening his technical knowledge. Additionally, the flexibility of not needing to dress formally for the office adds an extra layer of comfort and adaptability to the daily routine, allowing him to entirely focus on productivity and creativity.

  5. Jonathan Muszkat x Howdy
  6. Now at Howdy for over three years, he values the camaraderie and support built within the team. Jonathan discovered a community where he truly felt he belonged and could grow professionally globally.

“Working for a US company allowed me to be at the epicenter of innovation and entrepreneurship on a global level. The US is recognized globally as the birthplace of significant investments, challenging projects, and the ability to impact on a large scale. This atmosphere of constant advancement and the possibility of contributing to projects that define the technological future is what I truly value and motivates me to improve myself day after day.”

Having these opportunities has presented many benefits, as he shared, but also many challenges.

"The first challenge was the implementation of overtime calculation for a highly complex service, which involved considerable mathematics. This required me to immerse myself in different states’ employment laws, collaborate closely with the legal department, and develop the solution from scratch. Before taking on this challenge, three engineers could not carry out this project for various reasons. My work was especially under the observation and code review of the person with the highest position.”

“Being a Staff Software Engineer involves leading by example and promoting practices that improve not only the engineering team’s performance but also significantly contribute to the success and culture of the company. This challenge is ongoing and constantly evolving, requiring me to keep up to date with the latest technologies and methodologies and be an effective mentor to other engineers.”
